Dr. Carl Van Gils is a board certified foot surgeon who has been practicing in St. George since 1999. He is a Certified Wound Specialist and is the current medical director of the Wound Clinic at Dixie Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Van Gils trained at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. While there he helped publish the results of the “Desert Foot” experience, one of the first nationally recognized multidisciplinary programs dedicated to limb salvage in the diabetic population. Since then he has published in many peer reviewed journals and is a frequent local and international speaker on the diabetic foot.
In addition to diabetic foot complications, Dr. Van Gils also has a strong interest in neuropathy. He has been trained by Dr. Lee A. Dellon of the Johns Hopkins hospital on the surgical decompression of peripheral neuropathies in the lower extremity. He also is committed to the non-surgical treatment of this painful syndrome.
Dr. Van Gils’ other professional interest is in sports medicine. This is, in part, due to his own personal commitment to exercise and physical health. He is an avid runner and cyclist and has participated in triathlon racing for the last 4 years. He is looking forward to his first full Ironman in St. George 2010.
Dr. Van Gils is married to Kimberly and has four children: Marcus, Christian, Matthew, and Camile. He loves to spend time with his family and to play with his kids. Together, they enjoy camping, soccer, movies, and being outdoors.
