Pressure:Semes Weinstein 5.07 monofilament nylon probe is pressed against the skin until it buckles. Significant neuropathy is present if the monofilament buckles before the patient detects its presence.
Vibration: A 128-cycle tuning fork is touch over a bony promenience. In the absent of neuropathy, vibration perceived by the examiner will not exceed 10 sec. beyond the perceived sensations of the patient.
Touch (Sharp and Blunt): A wooden Q-tip snapped off to provide a sharp point and a dull point. The test is performed out of the patient's line of sight.Significant neuropathy is present if the patient is unable to differentiate between the sharp and blunt end as it is pressed against the bottom of the foot.
Reflex: Information not currently available
Proprioception: The physician holds the great toe by the sides and out of the patient's line of sight and moves the toe up and down. With significant neuropathy, the patient will be unable to determine the position in space when asked.
